Hi, Burasut here.
This time, I spoke with KontonnoGoma
over DMs about his videos recreating the movements of monsters from Monster Hunter.
I first came across KontonnoGoma around the time he posted his Plesioth
impression video, if I remember correctly.
Even back then, I thought he had something special. ( ˘ω˘)ｽﾔｧ
Rather than simply dressing up like a monster, he recreates their movements and attack animations with his own body. He has posted all kinds of recreations, including Ukanlos, Omega Planetes, and more.
So I asked him why he started doing these monster recreations in the first place, how he usually makes his videos, what goes on behind the scenes, his favorite monsters, and even his thoughts on Monster Hunter Frontier.

How he started recreating monsters
First, could you tell us what kind of things you usually do?
I film videos where I recreate the movements of Monster Hunter monsters, and then I post them!
Yeah, “monster recreation” probably fits better than just calling it cosplay.
What made you decide to actually film these ideas and post them?
I felt like it would be a waste to keep all the ideas in my head to myself and never put them out into the world…
so I worked up the courage and started doing it!
So it really did take some courage to get started.
By the way, when did you first get into Monster Hunter?
I started with XX [Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate overseas], and I’ve played Monster Hunter G, XX, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, and Monster Hunter Wilds.
I recently played Monster Hunter G and made it as far as Monoblos, the final village boss. I couldn’t play Monster Hunter: World or Iceborne back then because I didn’t have a PlayStation, but I’m thinking of starting them this summer.
So you started with XX, and now you’re going back and playing Monster Hunter G too.
Since World and Iceborne are still ahead of you, maybe they’ll give you some new monster recreation ideas as well.
With a name like KontonnoGoma, I’d assume your favorite monster is Chaotic Gore Magala. Is that right?
You’d think I should say Chaotic Gore Magala, but my actual favorite is Nakarkos… haha.
Partly because I started with XX, but honestly, I just absolutely love the design! Of course, I love Chaotic Gore too!!!
Nakarkos was a surprise!
But if you started with XX, I can definitely see it.
Its design is pretty unique too.
The Ukanlos video that shaped his direction
Out of everything you’ve posted so far, is there one video you feel especially attached to?
I love all of my videos, so it’s hard to pick just one, but I’d say the Ukanlos impression where it’s swimming through the ice is the one I’m most attached to.
That video was what really got me started making these monster recreation videos. It had snowed, and the idea just came to me. The conditions were absolutely brutal, but I filmed it anyway and posted it on X.
It was the first time one of my posts got several thousand likes—around 7,500—and it became the turning point that helped me figure out the direction I wanted to take with my videos.
So seeing the snow made you think of Ukanlos.
And after that video reached around 7,500 likes, it led into what you’re doing now.
That Ukanlos shoot must have been freezing.
Was that the hardest one you’ve done too?
The hardest one was definitely filming the Ukanlos impression in the snow while shirtless and wearing shorts.
Snow or not, monsters don’t wear clothes, so I thought I shouldn’t wear any either… Ideally I’d be completely naked, but then I couldn’t upload it to YouTube, so I kept the clothes to the bare minimum.
Monsters don’t wear clothes, so you shouldn’t either…
That’s some serious commitment.
When you go that far, do you ever suddenly stop and think, “What am I even doing right now?”
No. I’m serious about this.
I see. You’re completely serious about it, so that thought doesn’t even cross your mind while filming.
Since you film outdoors, I imagine people passing by see you pretty often. Have you ever been stopped or questioned by the police?
People passing by see me pretty often.
When I did the Plesioth impression, a family with children laughed at me, and that honestly made me kind of happy.
I’ve never been questioned by the police, but patrol cars do drive past me pretty often.
They never really react and just keep going.
So no police questioning so far.
Doing a Plesioth impression in public takes some courage too, but maybe being that confident actually makes it look less suspicious than you’d expect.
How the Omega Planetes video was made
More recently, your Omega Planetes recreation got a lot of attention too.
What made you want to recreate that one?
I thought it would be funny if I could get footage of lights spinning around on my back.
That’s how I usually come up with these videos. It starts with, “Wouldn’t it be funny if I could actually do this?” Then I add more ideas around it until it turns into a full video.
Rather than planning everything out from the beginning,
it starts with “this would be funny if I could pull it off,” and grows from there.
You can also see from his posts on X that he puts a lot of work into the individual props.
In the Omega video, which movement did you put the most effort into?
Definitely the wild rampage right at the beginning.
The opening is the most important part if you want to keep people watching, so I put the biggest, most visually striking movement right at the start and tried to recreate it as well as I could.
So you really do think about what to show right at the start.
From the viewer’s side, the costume and props look like they’d be the hardest part.
What’s actually the toughest part of getting ready to film?
The camera setup is the hardest part.
I can usually put the props together pretty quickly without much trouble, but figuring out where to put the camera is a different story…
This spot is too dark, that one has too many streetlights in the shot, this angle cuts off the movement I want to show… I end up struggling with that kind of thing pretty much every time.
So the camera is harder than the props.
That makes sense. These videos depend on seeing the full-body movement,
so if part of it gets cut off, you have to shoot it again.
And outdoors, the lighting isn’t always the same either.
Omega also brought people to his older videos
After the Omega Planetes video reached so many people,
did you notice any changes in your followers or YouTube subscribers?
I think my X followers increased by about 700, and my YouTube subscribers by about 1,5001.
I already had around 1,000 followers on X, but my YouTube channel only had around 100 subscribers, so I was really surprised by how much it grew.
But more than the follower increase itself, what made me happy was that people who saw the Omega recreation also went back and watched my older videos.
Some of those videos ended up getting several times more views, and some even more than ten times as many. It made me really happy because it confirmed that I’d been making the right kind of videos all along.

So more than the subscriber increase itself,
you were happy that people went back and watched the videos you had already made.
As someone who also makes videos, I can relate to that.
Has he played Monster Hunter Frontier?
This is something I personally wanted to ask.
Have you ever played Monster Hunter Frontier (MHF)?
I’ve never played it, but I used to watch people playing it.
It had so many brutal monsters that weren’t in the mainline games, and it was really fun to watch.
If the service were still running now, I’d definitely be playing it.
It’s frustrating that I missed out…
So you never played it yourself, but you did watch it.
MHF had a lot of monsters that never appeared in the mainline games. Have you ever thought about recreating any of them?
There are some Monster Hunter recreation ideas I want to try, but I’m keeping the specifics secret…
I think it’s more fun and unexpected if I just suddenly post them instead of announcing them beforehand! I’ve thought about trying some MHF monsters too.
So the specifics are staying secret.
Personally, I’d love to see UNKNOWN or Espinas, but I agree that this kind of video is probably funnier when it suddenly appears without warning.
About a collaboration with Burasut Lab
Finally, if we did a Monster Hunter recreation project together with production support from Burasut Lab,
would you be interested?
Of course, it would depend on the project, but I’d definitely be open to it!

We haven’t decided exactly what we’d do yet, but if possible, I’d like to come up with something that gives you a chance to try an MHF-style recreation.
After the interview
For this interview, KontonnoGoma talked with me about how he got started, the Ukanlos and Omega Planetes shoots, Monster Hunter Frontier, and plenty more.
Before the interview, I assumed a lot of these videos were made by simply getting an idea and running with it.
But after talking with him, I found out that a lot more thought goes into them—from what to show in the opening to exactly where the camera should go.
And after all that careful planning, he still goes out into the snow shirtless and in shorts to become Ukanlos, so I’m not sure “normal” is quite the right word here.
After the interview, his Valstrax recreation got a huge response and even reached No. 1 on YouTube’s Hype leaderboard. He has also been actively taking part in events such as the World Cosplay Summit.
When I subscribed, he had around 130 subscribers,
but by the time this article went up, he was already close to 4,500!
I can’t fall behind either…
He also said he’s interested in recreating MHF monsters,
so I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of videos show up next.
