Have you already played the Monster Hunter Stories 3 (MHST3) demo?
With save data transfer to the full version and the ability to obtain rare monsters, the demo has attracted a lot of attention since its release.
Among all the challenges in the demo, the most powerful enemy is Feral Brachydios.

I don’t think I can beat this…
And sorry if my English is off.
I get what “Wyvernsoul Gauge” means, but I’m not sure if “Wyvernsoul Defense” is correct.
In this article, I will explain a stable and item-free strategy to defeat Feral Brachydios in the MHST3 demo, based on real gameplay experience.
Feral Brachydios Overview

Level: 44
The level cap in the demo is 10, so most attacks will result in an instant defeat.
It has high resistance to fire and blast, but poison and water elements are effective, making Gypceros a perfect match.
Attack Patterns
| Normal State | ![]() |
| Enraged State | ![]() |
When covered with crystals, Feral Brachydios switches to Speed attacks.
On turn 2, it uses Smash Bomb, a powerful AoE attack.
You will lose 2 hearts, but that’s fine.
You can handle it.

Wyvernsoul Gauge: 6
Without applying Wyvernsoul Defense Down (Small), it is hard to break it in a single turn.

When you use Dragon-element skills, you gain a “Gauge Reduction (Large)” effect, so you can shred the gauge much faster.
Enraged State
It will only calm down after it uses Lightning.
How to deal with it:
- Break the Wyvernsoul Gauge for guaranteed evasion
- Endure it while riding
If you can’t break the gauge in time, use Ride Mode to tank it safely.

Recommended Team Setup
This setup assumes that Feral Nerscylla has already been defeated.
Water Gypceros is required, so defeat Feral Nerscylla first if you haven’t.
(I will cover how to beat Feral Nerscylla in another guide.)
Monsters

Water Gypceros×3
The key monster for this strategy.
Bring at least 2.
Use the egg skill: Water Mirror Break to reduce Wyvernsoul Gauge Defense.Subspecies is also OK.
Skills to use
Egg Skill: Surface Break

Thunder Tobi-Kadachi
A support pick for stamina recovery when you have a safe turn.
Also helps counter Power attacks with Speed-type moves.
Skills to use
Egg Skill: Charge Up

Dreadqueen Rathian
A Speed-type option for Deadly Poison and countering Power attacks.
If Deadly Poison lands, the clear becomes much faster.
Skills to use
Toxic Sweep
The core of this strategy is Water Gypceros.
As long as you include a Speed-type monster such as Dreadqueen Rathian or Thunder Tobi-Kadachi to counter Power attacks, you can clear this fight safely.
Since Gypceros’s egg skill: Water Mirror Break is a Technical-type skill, there is no need to include additional Technical-type monsters.
Rathalos is fixed.

Equipment

Weapon: Gypceros Hammer (Venom Monster)
Armor: Tentacle Armor
Sweet Spot (BLNT) is ideal for reducing the Wyvernsoul Gauge, and it can also apply poison.
Damage doesn’t matter here.
Stamina management is tough in this fight, so Namielle armor is a great pick.
(It’s easy to obtain, so I’ll cover the method in a separate post.)
Bonus: Magia Charm
A healing option using “PluckyMelody.”
Use it only when you have a safe moment: GreenBlueRedGreen to activate it.
You can also raise evasion with “Defensive Ditty,” but Ogden (the Hunting Horn user) already provides evasion buffs, so it’s not necessary.
In practice, it’s mostly useful only for early RNG situations.
If you avoid that early RNG, you may not need to use it at all.
Battle Strategy
Ogden & Pukei-Pukei

They support you with Pitfall Traps and Throwing Knives while adding extra poison damage.
If you focus on surviving, you’ll eventually win, which makes the run very consistent.
(They sometimes increase your hearts too.)
Strategy

Set the strategy to “Focus on Same Monster” to prevent counterattacks.
For some reason, your Monstie may ignore this and get countered, but it’s likely a bug and should be fixed in the full release.
Battle Flow
Once you’re prepared, it’s time for the real fight.

Can the Gypceros army really win…?
Turn 1 (Random)
Mainly uses Power attacks.
Counter with Speed, or buff allies with a Hunting Horn if someone is targeted.
Turn 2 (Smash Bomb)
You can cancel this with status effects.
Recommended options:
- Gypceros Subspecies: Tail Stunner (Stun)
- Feral Nerscylla: Sleep Needle (Sleep)
This lets you avoid the AoE safely.
Turn 3 and After
This is where the fight really starts.
① Apply Water Mirror (debuff)
② Use Just Meat to reduce the Wyvernsoul Gauge
③ If the gauge is almost broken, finish it with a basic attack to save stamina
Repeat this loop and manage your stamina carefully.
Backup Plan
When your Kinship Gauge reaches 100, switch to another monster and start charging that gauge too, so you always have a backup for AoE turns like Lightning.
(I ended up using Ride Mode about 2–3 times before the clear.)
During downed windows or safe turns, you can also stabilize the fight by using Plucky Melody for healing and Charge Thunder from Tobi-Kadachi for stamina recovery.
Clear Result

Thanks to the mid-fight healing, I was able to finish the fight safely with 3 hearts remaining.
With proper healing and gauge control, this strategy allows you to defeat Feral Brachydios safely and consistently.

After clearing, you can obtain useful equipment and monsters for the demo and prepare for future challenges.
Give it a try and enjoy MHST3 even more!
